Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary Kerala : is situated in the beautiful backwaters of Devikulam Taluka in the district of Idukki in Kerala. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala is the home to the endangered giant grizzled squirrel in India along with the tigers, elephant, bonnet macaques, gaur, Kraits, spotted deer, spectacled cobras, sambar, turtles, rabbit, hanuman monkey, vipers, little cormorants, darters, black eagles and peacocks. Different types of colorful butterflies could be seen in the Sanctuary.

You can also notice different types of trees such as the unique thorny scrub forest with Xerophytic species. Other than this the flora that can be seen in this Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala are dry deciduous forest, thorny scrub forests, high sholas and wet grasslands. There are other various kinds of species of flora such as the Acacia arabica (Karivelam), Acacia leucofolia (Velvelam), Santalum album (Chandanam), Anogeissuslatifolia (Mazhukanjiram), Elaeocarpus recurvatus (Bhadraksham) and Strobilanthus kunthianus (Neelakurinji) in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala. The Marayoor sandalwood that is available in the sanctuary is well known for their enigmatic fragrance and also a good place to watch herds of Bison pass by.The weathered rocks add to the scenic beauty of the undulating landscape of the region of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala. The sanctuary offers a spectacular view of the Kuthumkal Waterfalls that flows down from the mountains. To make it easier for viewing the scenic beauty of the sanctuary many watch towers have been constructed. Those who are passionate about boating and trekking can try it out at this sanctuary since there is the opportunity of doing so in this sanctuary. The best time of the year for a trip to the sanctuary is during the early hours of the day from the month of December to April. While on a vacation to the sanctuary you can get an accommodation at the private lodges available at Marayoor, Munnar and Udumalpetta. Accommodation is also available in the government guesthouses at Munnar and Udumalpetta.
