The Silent Valley National Park Kerala : In contrast to the other wildlife parks of the country The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala has an eventful history of its own. The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala is locallty known by the name of Sairandhrivanam which translates to mean the forest in the valley. The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala is situated in the district of Palakkad in Kerala, India. The park is known as The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala because of the absence of noisy cicadas, a kind of insect that is somewhat similar to locusts. The park is relatively smaller with an area of about 89 kms.

The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala is considered as the last representative of the several tropical forests that were present in India. The Kunthi River descends from the Nilgiri hills from an altitude of 2000 m above the sea level and passes through the entire length of the valley, gushing down to the plains through the dense forest of the park. The evapo-transpiration of the forests makes the atmosphere cooler, helping the condensation of the water vapor much easy. Thus it facilitates the summer rains.

The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala has a remarkable range of wildlife such as the tigers, deer, and mammals which are native to the South Indian Peninsula. The mammals comprises of the Nilgiri Langur, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Lion-Tailed Macaque, Flying squirrel and Civet Cat. There are about 100 species of butterflies and 400 species of moth prevalent in the forests. Different types of birds such as the Malabar Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill, hoopoes, tree pie, barbets, crow pheasant, woodpeckers, rollers, drongoes, kingfishers and parakeets can be found here. One can also notice diverse kinds of snake, amphibians and lizards over here. Other than this there are 110 species of plants in The Silent Valley National Park, Kerala inclusive of those plants are known for their medicinal properties. The suitable time for visiting the place is from September to March.
