Mukkurthi National Park
Mukurthi National Park is another major attraction of the Nilgiris. It is located on the south eastern corner of the Nilgiris Plateau 27 Kms from ooty. Mukurthi peak is certainly the most notable height of the Nilgiris which stands 8380 feet above the sea level and commands one of the most magnificent views to be seen in India. This park is also a part of Nilgiri Bio-sphere reserve and situated 40 km from ooty. It contains a viable population on Nilgiri Thar (Hamitragus-hilocrius), Sambhar, Barking deer, Nilgiri marten and otter, Jungle cat, Jackal etc.
Avifauna consists of hill birds viz laughing and whistling thrushes, woodcick, wild pigeaon and black eagle. Butter-flies with Himalayan affinity like the Blu Admiral, Indian Red Admiral, Indian Fritillary, Indian Cabbage white, Hedge blues and rainbow trouts can be also be seen.Trekking routes exist from Parsan valley, portimund, pykara etc. Trout fishing is recommended in the rivers and lakes of Mukurthi. Permission from Asst. Director, Fisheries Department, Udhagai, must be obtained in advance for fishing.
How to Reach Mukkurthi National Park :
By Air : Nearest airport is at Coimbatore which is 140 kms.
By Rail : ooty is the nearest railhead is well connected by rail with the important towns of India like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Trichy, Tanjore and Kanyakumari. Various express and super fast trains pass through Tirunelveli.
By Road : State transport buses and private buses connect otty from major towns and cities within the south india such as Chennai, Bangalore, Salem, Coimbatore, Nagapattinam, Erode and Tirupati.
Best time to visit : February to May
Accommodation : Forest Rest House at Avalanche, Pykara and trekking sheds.
